The second method involves spraying the charcoal with a stream of water from a garden hose of spraying can. The important point to note here is that while this may be an effective method to close a fire, a lot of steam is generated during the process. That again is accident prone. While this method may work for small homemade charcoal grill fires, it is recommended not to be used for large charcoal grills. Instead, a third and more effective method can be used.


In this method, a layer of sand is spread over the hot charcoals, cutting off the oxygen supply and putting out the fire. Check after an hour for any burning charcoal. These still burning large pieces can then be picked up carefully with tongs having large handles and submerged in water kept in a metal bucket. That helps to completely put out the fire and get rid of any possibility of a flare up. Once, the lumps of charcoal are cool, they can be dried and stored away for further use.

Cleaning Up

After you have put out the fire completely, take the residual ash and wrap it up tightly in aluminum foil, before disposing it off in a metallic trash can to avoid any kind of accidental flare ups.
